Through-coloured mineral rendering

Monocouche rendering.
A scraped mineral finish.

Monocouche is a coloured, cement-based render used on suitable backgrounds. We can discuss its texture, the preparation your walls need and how it compares with a silicone finish.

Colour within the render

The material and texture
work together.

Monocouche contains colour within the mineral render rather than relying on a separate initial coat of masonry paint. For a scraped finish, the applied material is worked at the appropriate stage to create the final texture.

It can be considered for suitable masonry on extensions, new walls and refurbishment projects. Wall construction, background condition, exposure and the product specification determine whether it is appropriate.

The word monocouche does not mean every wall receives one simple pass with no preparation. Application passes, required depth, reinforcement and any preparatory coats depend on the selected system.

Extensions and new walls

The background needs assessment for condition, moisture, suction and compatibility. New masonry is not automatically ready for immediate rendering.

Openings, changes in material and the junction with an existing house need suitable detailing. Required beads, reinforcement and movement arrangements follow the proposed system and construction.

Discuss an extension

Existing rendered homes

Loose, hollow or incompatible finishes must be dealt with before new render. Retaining or removing existing material is a specification decision after assessment.

Older or solid-wall buildings may need a different material approach. A decorative finish should not be used to conceal unresolved moisture or movement problems.

Assessing existing render

Published monocouche project

A York extension.
A recorded mineral finish.

The extension shown above is identified in the existing York project record as monocouche coloured render. The record describes preparation of the new walls, basecoat where required and detailing around the openings and edges.

The photograph shows the rendered extension and glazing, with materials and patio work still visible. It supports the rendered extension example, rather than completion of the entire renovation.

Preparation, application and finishing

Specify the background.
Time the finish.

  1. 01

    Assess and specify

Check the wall construction and existing finishes. Agree the product, preparation, colour, texture and access in the proposed scope.

  2. 02

    Prepare and detail

Protect nearby surfaces, repair the background and install the specified beads, preparation and reinforcement. Do not assume a single build-up suits every wall.

  3. 03

    Apply and scrape

Apply the render to the product requirements and create the scraped finish at the correct stage. Weather and background conditions affect the working sequence.

  4. 04

    Review and maintain

Check the finished elevations and surroundings. Discuss suitable care and the limits of later colour and texture matching.

Planning your project

A clear scope.
A useful quotation.

Compare a complete written scope, including background preparation and access. A thicker mineral finish and a thin-coat system should not be compared on the topcoat name alone.

Homeowner questions

Does monocouche need painting?

It is through-coloured, so a separate paint finish is not normally part of the initial application. Later care or treatment depends on the installed product and exposure; check compatibility before painting.

Does ‘one coat’ mean no basecoat or preparation?

No. The selected product and background determine preparation, reinforcement and application passes. The name is not a universal instruction to apply directly to any wall.

Can it go over existing render?

Only where an appropriate specified system permits it and the background is suitable. Loose, unstable or incompatible existing finishes need attention, and removal may be required.

Can damaged monocouche be repaired?

A local repair may be possible where the background and surrounding render are sound. Matching the original colour and scraped texture can be difficult, particularly after weathering. Wider refinishing may be worth discussing.
