Pebbledash refurbishment

Pebbledash removal
& replacement.

A different exterior does not always require the same amount of work. We assess whether your pebbledash can be retained or needs removal, then explain the preparation and the finish each option can achieve.

Two routes to consider

Keep a sound background.
Replace a failing one.

01 · Retain and coat

When the pebbledash is secure

A stable, compatible surface may be suitable for a spray cork coating after cleaning and repairs. This can refresh the colour while avoiding complete removal of sound material.

The existing aggregate profile can remain visible. A thin coating does not automatically turn coarse pebbledash into a flat rendered wall; additional levelling would need a suitable specification.

  • Bond and compatibility assessed first
  • Loose areas and defects still need attention
  • Existing texture influences the result

02 · Remove and replace

When removal is the right start

Where the pebbledash has failed, removal exposes the masonry for assessment and repair. A new render system can then be built on the prepared background.

A specified reinforced basecoat and silicone topcoat can provide a more even appearance than coating the original aggregate. Silicone finishes still have a texture; they are not a polished, completely smooth surface.

  • Failed material removed to a suitable background
  • Exposed masonry inspected and repaired
  • New edges, basecoat and finish specified
The replacement silicone system

The condition of the walls comes before either option. Loose material, water entry and significant movement cannot be made sound by applying a new topcoat.

What the project records show

Removal and coating
are different jobs.

The Harrogate removal project

The Harrogate photograph above belongs to the published pebbledash replacement record. It describes removal back to brick, followed by a two-coat mesh-reinforced basecoat and silicone finish. That is the recorded system for this job, rather than a specification for every property.

The York photograph alongside is a separate cork coating project over prepared render and brickwork. The retained masonry profile is visible, showing how a coating follows the existing surface.

What removal involves

Plan the disruption.
Prepare for the new finish.

  1. 01

    Inspect and agree the route

Assess stability, cracks and the surface profile. Discuss the appearance you want and explain whether retention or removal is suitable.

  2. 02

    Protect and remove

Plan safe access and protect windows, paving and nearby surfaces. Removal creates noise, dust and heavy waste, which need to be allowed for in the scope.

  3. 03

    Inspect the exposed walls

Strongly bonded material can damage brick faces during removal. Assess the exposed masonry and agree how additional repairs or changes to the preparation will be handled.

  4. 04

    Apply the replacement system

Prepare the background and install the specified beads, reinforcement, basecoat and finish. Allow for the selected materials’ curing and weather requirements.

Planning your project

A clear scope.
A useful quotation.

The strength and condition of the old pebbledash can matter as much as the size of the house. A comparison should include preparation and waste, as well as the final finish.

  • Area, height and access to the elevations
  • How firmly the existing pebbledash is bonded
  • Masonry repairs revealed during removal
  • Scaffolding, protection and waste disposal
  • Levelling, basecoat and replacement finish

Homeowner questions

Does pebbledash always have to come off?

No. Sound, compatible pebbledash may be suitable to retain after preparation. Widespread loose or hollow areas need a different approach, and your preferred finished texture also affects the decision.

Can removal leave exposed brickwork as the final finish?

Do not assume that the bricks beneath pebbledash will be suitable for display. They may be damaged, mixed or affected by removal. A replacement render finish and any masonry repairs should be discussed before work starts.

Can just one wall be refurbished?

A single elevation may be possible. Colour, texture and termination details need planning where it meets the remaining pebbledash or other surfaces.

Is coating always cheaper than removal?

Retaining suitable material can reduce removal and waste, but repairs, levelling and access may still be substantial. The actual condition and agreed finish are needed for a useful comparison.
