Pebbledash Removal and Modernisation

Spray cork can be applied over some existing pebbledash surfaces, provided the original render remains secure and the wall has been properly prepared.

The surface will need to be cleaned and any loose stones, cracks or damaged sections repaired.

A primer, repair coat or levelling basecoat may also be required depending on the condition and depth of the original texture.

Spray cork will coat and soften the appearance of pebbledash, but it does not automatically create a completely flat surface.

The amount of texture that remains visible will depend on the size and depth of the original aggregate.

Where a flatter appearance is required, additional levelling preparation or complete pebbledash removal may be the better option.

Hollow pebbledash has lost its bond with the background beneath it.

Loose sections cannot reliably support a new coating and must be removed. If hollow areas are widespread across the property, complete removal may be more suitable than carrying out numerous local repairs.

We inspect the walls before recommending either system.

The old pebbledash is mechanically removed back to the original brickwork or blockwork.

Once exposed, the walls are cleaned and inspected. Damaged masonry, loose pointing and other defects are repaired before the new render system is installed.

The exact preparation required will only become completely clear after the original finish has been removed.

Removing strongly bonded pebbledash can damage the face of some bricks, particularly where the original render has been applied aggressively or the masonry is soft.

This does not necessarily prevent the walls from being re-rendered, but repairs and additional preparation may be required.

Once the walls have been prepared, we generally install an appropriate basecoat with fibreglass reinforcement mesh.

The mesh is embedded across the surface to reinforce the system and distribute minor stresses.

Once cured, the basecoat is primed before a coloured silicone topcoat is applied.

Silicone render provides a much flatter and more uniform appearance than pebbledash, but it is not normally polished completely smooth.

The topcoat contains a fine grain that creates a controlled textured finish.

Different grain sizes may be available depending on the selected product and desired appearance.

Complete pebbledash removal followed by a reinforced silicone render system normally creates the sharpest and most contemporary result.

Removing the original texture allows the walls to be levelled and prepared before the final finish is applied.

Spray cork still creates an attractive and refreshed appearance, but some of the original pebbledash profile may remain.

Applying spray cork over stable pebbledash will normally involve less labour, waste and preparation than completely hacking the property back to brick.

The actual price depends on the condition of the walls, amount of repair work, access, scaffolding and finish selected.

A property survey is required before an accurate comparison can be provided.

Scaffolding is normally required when working on full upper-storey elevations.

It provides safe access for removing the old render, preparing the walls and applying the new system.

Scaffolding requirements will be included or clearly identified within your quotation.

Where complete removal is selected, the old pebbledash creates a significant amount of heavy waste.

Skip hire and waste removal can be included within the project quotation. The working area will also be cleaned once the rendering work has been completed.

Yes. It is possible to refurbish one elevation where the damage or dated finish is limited to a particular side of the property.

However, the new finish may look different from the remaining pebbledash.

We will explain how the materials, colours and termination points can be handled before work begins.

Silicone render is supplied as a coloured topcoat and does not need to be painted immediately after application.

It is available in a wide range of colours, allowing the finished exterior to complement the existing roof, windows, doors and surrounding property features.

The timescale depends on the size of the property, strength of the existing pebbledash, condition of the underlying masonry, weather and amount of preparation required.

A complete removal and silicone render project will take longer than applying a cork coating over stable pebbledash.
